We really are determined to give you the widest range of fresh local produce. So in an effort to keep you satisfied we also use suppliers who farm within 10miles of our site. This broadens our range and helps farmers gain a fair price for their produce. Even better is that you are saving money on your weekly veggies, and supporting the local rural economy!
So let’s meet our friends!
Walmestone Court Farm has been in the Gibson family since 1923. Today it is run by Steve and his brothers, conventionally growing some of the tastiest vegetables you will find in the area.
Steve and Marie Parsley have been running Walmestone Growers for the past 23 years. Their range is extensive with specialist vegetables and herbs being cut and picked to order for your veg box! All the crops grown under glass are kept clean of pest using Biological Control (rather than harmful insecticides), and they even use Bumble Bees to pollinate their tomatoes!
Tania grows fruit and vegetables at her 10-acre smallholding at Preston near Wingham. Her great-grandfather bought the land in 1900 and Tania is the fourth generation of her family to farm there. Tania has supplied us with the tender baby carrots, the beautiful beetroot and the really crunchy spring onions that you’ve enjoyed in your boxes. The broad beans you have this week are also hers.
Tania grows her early veg under glass cloches in the open. The cloches keep the soil dry and warm over the winter, giving her seeds an early start and capturing every single early ray of sunshine.
Trevor Bradley at Preston: Trevor grows cauliflowers, Romanesco caulis and Brussels sprouts in the main.
Moss Hadley at Preston: Moss farms at Preston and supplies us with a variety of veg all year round including, spring greens, spinach, runner beans, parsnips and cabbages.
Verne Laslett at Weddington, near Ash: Verne supplies us with lettuces all summer and then with a variety of squashes and pumpkins. We also got our Cavalo Nero (black cabbage) from Verne.
Dickie Ovenden at Marshborough near Ash: Dickie provides us with spinach, red spring onions and various other veg all year. He gets his veg from his own farm at Marshborough plus his nephews' farms.
Other veg suppliers include Ian Castle at Ash (courgettes and butternut squash), Les Moran at Broad Oak (runner beans and broad beans), Dougie Shave at Patrixbourne (French and Runner Beans), Richard Ash at Westwood (potatoes).
We also provide other local produce for our customers and these are also sourced locally:
Soft Fruit from Kelseys at Wickhambreaux, free range eggs from Coastal Farms at Chartham, cheese from Canterbury Cheesemakers, apples and pears from Geoff Thomas at Preston, apple juice from Doddington Farm at Faversham and Asparagus from nicky Dyer at Sevenscore.
The Chandler and Dunn families have an agricultural tradition in the area that’s now into its 5th generation - and with seven members actively involved in the business there is a combination of more than 270 years of hard learned, hands-on experience bringing you the tastiest meat in the district! The selected range of quality meats is guaranteed to be locally and naturally reared and prepared to the highest standards. Indeed, to back up their claims the farm is approved under the Farm Assured British Beef and Lamb scheme – FABBL.
